WEATHER: Severe weather could impact area today, slight risk chance for region heading into evening hours

The temperature is going to go up, and then a pending cold front is going to hit all that warm air and bring a familiar rumble into the air this evening as showers and thunderstorms are on tap for tonight.

NWS Peachtree City and local officials are warning that Polk, Paulding and Haralson Counties are among those in the slight risk area for severe weather starting this afternoon and stretching into the late night hours, with damaging winds above 60 mph and hail possible with forthcoming thunderstorms set to impact the area.

The reason behind this sudden influx of severe weather threat is a cold front moving into the deep south colliding with warm air and moisture being drawn up from the Gulf, and are set to collide as conditions change this afternoon.

Expect frequent lightning and heavy rain in this round of stormy weather when they do impact the area later today, meaning that drivers will want to take caution on the roadways if driving around this afternoon and evening in any storm events.

NWS Peachtree City expects that as warm weather is pushed out by the cold front, it’ll provide a chance for the storm system to dissipate but isolated thunderstorms may be possible overnight.

The cold front is moving into the area after it has sat over Texas, Oklahoma and across the deep south, and will be able to gain strength as it collides with the warm air settled over Georgia, Florida and the Carolinas.

Rainy weather is expected to stick around through the weekend with chances up to 90% through Saturday, and falling down to 20% on Sunday as the thermometer drops back down into the 70s during the day, and into the 50s and 40s over the weekend nights ahead.

Sunshine and seasonal temps return on Monday through the beginning of next week.

Check back for any potential watches and warnings required later today as the weather continues to develop.
