The good weather couldn’t last forever.
Now the National Weather Service is calling for rain’s return, and Polk County is expected to get soggy over the coming days. Enough so that real concerns about flooding are now being considered by local officials.
NWS Peachtree City is calling for rain to return during the overnight hours with upward of a 50% chance of showers as of this posting, and overnight temps down to 45 as wet weather moves into the area.
Tuesday’s forecast also calls for rain, with showers expected after 3 p.m. and highs up to 60 on the day. Expect wind gusts as high as 20 mph with a 70% chance of showers expected.
It will be raining overnight Tuesday and into Wednesday, with rain chances basically at 100% for both days as of the beginning of the week. Look for temps to remain cool throughout the overnight hours down to 49 on Tuesday night, and up to 67 on Wednesday with the wet weather and windy conditions.
Only a chance of showers for Thursday (at the moment) at 20% might give Polk County a time to drain some water off from two days of rainfall, but the reprieve won’t last long. It’ll be partly sunny on Thursday, with a high of 61. Temps overnight will dip down near freezing to 34.
Sunshine will give Polk a chance to dry out Friday with a high of 61 in store, but rainfall could return during the overnight hours with a 40% chance in the current forecast. NWS Peachtree City expects it to begin after 1 a.m., and keep going through Saturday.
Look for chances of thunderstorms over the weekend but showers are likely as highs get up to 67 on the day, and more rain overnight with a low near 44.
Rain chances also are in store for Sunday, up to 40% and temps only up to 59 on the day.
The rounds of rain come from cold fronts interacting with warm air over the southeast, drawing rain up from the Gulf of Mexico into the south. Further north, rounds of snow and ice are expected to impact the Midwest and Northeast.
Forthcoming forecasted rain has local officials concerned about the potential for flooding. Polk County Emergency Management officials put out a brief note on social media earlier today encouraging residents to keep an eye on the forecast and the possibility of rising waters over the coming days.
