UPDATE:
Tuesday’s Rockmart City Council meeting will include a vote about the proposed Carlton Drive development, but only for the purposes of deciding on holding a public hearing on the new plan, according to city officials.
City Manager Stacey Smith explained that they are seeking only to schedule the public hearing over the changes made to the development plan that were put forth in 2024.
There will be no vote to approve the plan itself during the February meeting.
Check back for additional details as they become available.

Revised plans with additional entry and exit back up for vote on Tuesday
Residents last year weren’t happy with the idea of additional housing being built around Carlton Drive, but a plan tabled last year is coming back before the City Council – somewhat scaled down and with an additional driveway to get in and out of the new development.
The City Council agenda on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. includes a request to consider the zoning change for property on Carlton Drive and along Highway 113 almost a year after they rejected the request following an outcry from neighbors concerned about increased traffic and density in the area.
Smith Douglas Homes last year wanted to build 160 new homes on the land, but City Manager Stacey Smith reports the new plan scales down that proposal to around 100. Slightly over the 96 the city wanted back then, but a compromise for the development density planned previously.
Smith said developers have also come back with a plan to fix entrance and exit issues that raised concerns with those already living around the proposed development lobbying against the new neighborhood due to serious concerns over wrecks around Rockmart High School.
City Council meets on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. and will consider this and other items on their agenda for the February session. A work session is being held at 5:30 p.m. at city hall in the Council Meeting Room.
