An event inspired several years ago by the loss of a friend continued this past week in downtown Cedartown at a local hair salon, with hopes that attendees get good news from tests that only take a few minutes to conduct but can save lives.
FHF Hair Design hosted the Mobile Mammography Unit from Atrium Health Floyd on Friday, bringing in a record-setting 18 clients to get testing for breast cancer with mammograms without having to make an appointment and wait in an office.
Owner Hal Floyd said this was the fifth year he has hosted the unit in the parking lot behind his salon, with dozens of people getting tested during Breast Cancer Awareness Month since the event began in 2019.

He started all this in honor of friend Lisa Saucier Johnson, who died of breast cancer in 2018. This was the fifth year he hosted the unit.
Tammy Norrell, the Outreach Coordinator for Atrium Health Floyd’s Breast Cancer Center, said they have been making multiple stops across the area providing screenings in the unit that has the same 2D and 3D Mammography equipment used in doctors offices across the country. In 2023, the unit found 12 new breast cancer diagnoses out of 3,400 screenings conducted throughout the calendar year.
She noted that hundreds of screenings were conducted in September, and many more have already been completed this month.
It is one of two units in the Atrium Health Floyd fleet providing breast cancer screening in Chattooga, Floyd, Bartow, Polk, and across the state line in Cherokee County, Alabama, among other spots across the region.
The Mobile Mammography Unit has many more stops to make before Breast Cancer Awareness Month is over, and the hopes are that they are able to help more women ensure they are cancer free, or help those who are discovering their diagnosis fight and overcome the disease.
