North College Drive shutdown coming up Monday morning

Bad news, commuters: another shutdown on a well-driven street is coming up tomorrow morning.

North College Drive from Evergreen Lane to Cherokee Road will be closed off to traffic starting first thing on Monday morning, August 26. The cones go into place at 7:30 a.m.

City officials posted a notice about the shutdown this morning on social media, but did not immediately include a cause for the closure.

The road will re-open as soon “as soon as possible,” per the posting.

City Manager Edward Guzman reported that the water department is making a necessary water line repair due to a leakage discovered over the past few days.

Due to the placement of the line, it requires a portion of the road surface to be dug up to get to the line.

The road will be closed to thru traffic to keep crews working on the roadway surface safe, but residents along North College Drive in the area will be able to access their homes and driveways.

Guzman said the repair will hopefully not take too long, but that will depend on the conditions of the pipe that needs to be replaced. Since crews are going to be digging up the pipe on Monday and are unsure of the conditions and extent of the leakage and damage, additional closure time may be required on Tuesday. Local residents should not experience a loss of water supply during the repair due to the way crews are expected to resolve the issue on Monday, but a shutoff might be necessary. A dip in water pressure while the repair is underway may also be experienced.

Officials are hopeful that it won’t be necessary for additional Tuesday morning closures, but do want parents who utilize North College Drive as an access route to Cherokee Elementary School on Evergreen Lane to plan ahead if necessary for detours if more work is required.

Georgia Power needed the city to close on a portion of West John Hand Road on Friday morning for utility work.

Thru traffic should detour around via John Hand Road to North Main Street to the east or Cave Spring Road to the west, and use Cherokee Drive to access 27 North to Cave Spring Road/Booger Hollow Road as well for the day.

Check back for any further details as they become available.
