Former 4-H building changes hands from County to City, Cedartown DDA

The Cedartown Downtown Development Authority are the proud new owners of the former home to Polk County’s Extension Service office, remembered by many as the 4-H building on the corner of East Avenue and Main Street.

City Commissioners made the transfer of the property official during the August regular session last week when they approved the transfer of the property from city ownership to that of the Downtown Development Authority to decide what to do with it further.

The Commission had previously voted to take over the building in a land swap with Polk County, who were the title holders for the past decades on the property.

It was the former home of the UGA Extension Service office and the 4-H program until they moved into the former world headquarters of Cedarstream further up Main Street in May 2021 after remodeling.

Since then, some ideas for reuse of the building have been proposed – at one point it was considered to be the new home for the Public Defender’s Office due to its proximity to the County Courthouses – but thus far its older construction and repair needs have made that a difficult task.

The city hopes the DDA will either find a way to utilize the space for future city development, or put the property on the market to sale, City Manager Edward Guzman noted ahead of last week’s vote.
