Cedartown Commission gathers Monday for August work session

City officials are gathering on Monday evening for their August work session, and have a special request before them for a fun event on Friday.

Commissioners will be hearing from Jody Bentley-Smith and Shannon Watters, who are helping to organize this year’s Bulldog Bash in downtown Cedartown. The pair are seeking permission from the Commission to close off Prior Street for Friday evening’s event.

The 4th annual Bulldog Bash is being held from 6 to 8 p.m. on August 9.

The football season kickoff event provides an opportunity for families to meet and greet the 2024 Bulldogs, along with opportunities for food, face painting, vendors to peruse and pics with CHS mascot Mack.

That’s not the only item up before the City Commissioners for the work session.

They’ll also be hosting a discussion on Monday evening of changes being made to animal regulations within the city. City Manager Edward Guzman explained that the city is looking at a new ordinance – one that still needs approval from the city attorney – on limiting the number of dogs and cats that can be in a residence.

Guzman explained the city received complaints about the number of dogs and cats in some residences, and the city plans to take a pragmatic approach to the problem. He said the goal is to look at the issue via the number of animals living within a certain square footage, while also recognizing that not all situations are the same.

The city is also taking another look at the Downtown Entertainment District map proposed by Director of Tourism and Economic Development Oscar Guzman during a previous session.

During the previous discussion of the idea of the Downtown Entertainment District, Oscar Guzman said at the time he expected there might be needed changes to the map created for city officials to mull over. He also planned to get additional thoughts from downtown business owners before the city could move forward with their plans to setup an Entertainment District, similar to what is already in place in communities within Northwest Georgia like Rome and Cartersville.

Commissioners will finish off with an executive session for the August work session.

Monday’s meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the Commission meeting room at City Hall on East Avenue.
