HCSO: Chase on stolen motorcycle ends with crash, multiple charges for Carrollton man

A Carrollton man was arrested on multiple charges including drug and firearm possession after he crashed a stolen motorcycle during a chase with the Haralson County Sheriffs Office.

The Tuesday chase with James Michael Horton, 34, of a Carrollton address, began when Deputy Alexander Zeno tried to stop a motorcycle at the intersection of Highway 78 and Arbacoochee Road in Tallapoosa for no tail lights.

Deputy Jarrett Chandler was close by and joined the chase, which continued on Highway 78 and reached speeds of 90 mph and nearly hit another driver, per a release from the Haralson County Sheriffs Office, and wound down Old Ridgeway Road, Old Bushmill Road, and then when trying to turn onto Highway 27 at Hilltop Road, Horton lost control of the motorcycle and crashed into the median.

He was taken into custody after the motorcycle was lifted off of him by Deputy Chandler.

“These deputies did a great job of getting another wanted criminal/drug dealer off the streets of Haralson County,” states Sheriff Stacy Williams. “Motorcycle chases are very difficult, and the tools we can use are limited in cases such as this. In this case, the deputies remained calm and worked as a team to bring this criminal to justice. Mr. Horton was wanted in several different jurisdictions and now, he will face justice for his actions. We will continue to pursue and arrest criminals who continually violate our laws and spread this poison to our citizens.  We will not tolerate it. Period.”

The chase wasn’t the only thing Horton found himself in trouble for following the crash. Police found that he was on probation and was also a convicted felon as soon as they were able to identify him. He also was found with a pistol, suspected methamphetamine, a set of digital scales and several Suboxone strips.

Deputies also found that the motorcycle had been reported stolen out of Temple when it was checked during the cleanup of the wreck.

Horton was transported to the hospital and checked and then released to deputies, who transported him to the Haralson County Detention Center where he remained in custody with bond denied on felony and misdemeanor charges.

Those included: Fleeing and Attempting to Elude, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, Possession of a Firearm by Convicted Felon, VGCSA – Possession of Methamphetamines, Theft by Receiving Stolen Property, as well as multiple traffic citations.
