The Aragon Police will be needing a new chief after the current head of the city’s law enforcement arm will be stepping down and head back into retirement.
Police Chief Julie Collins turned in a resignation letter on Monday morning to the city according to acting Mayor Judd Fee.
He said that he will only comment on the letter submitted and that it stated her reason was that she wanted to go back into retirement.
Polk Today reached out to Collins for comment, but she declined.
Her letter did end with the following note: “Thanks to all the citizens of Aragon for being so kind and accepting.”
Collins will be stepping down effective November 8, so she will be remaining on the job through then. Following that, the Mayor noted that Capt. John Tortoso will be acting chief.
Fee added that he will not be hiring anyone at the immediate moment to take Collins’ place in the chief’s position.
Collins already spent a lifetime in law enforcement and came into the job following the retirement of Chief Terry Wheeler, who briefly stepped into the role after long service at the city’s Municipal Court judge.
Her long career in law enforcement included a stint with the Georgia State Patrol, the Villa Rica Police Department and the Powder Springs Police Department.
The Aragon Police Department has been through a number of chiefs over the past years, with several serving in the office under three different administrations.
