Cedartown commission set to meet for the September session this evening

The Cedartown City Commission is back in session after gathering for a chance to meet new Recreation Director Jeff Hulsey, this time to take care of several items of business during their evening meeting.

Among those is the appointment of a new City Manager to take over for Bill Fann effective October 1, when his retirement becomes official and he is able to let another take over the position.

Fann, who announced that he was planning to retire previously, said that he was happy to be finishing out a long career of public service in several roles, and conclude his career with the City of Cedartown.

“It has been a long road,” Fann said. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity to spend time with my family, most of all my grandchildren in particular who I don’t get to see too often.”

The Commission will be making the appointment as their first item of new business before the board this evening. They also face a decision on the millage rate for 2020, the second phase of a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant being sought to continue work on the Goodyear Park Soccer Complex, a beer and wine package license for Jayesh Patel at Cedartown Grocery and Tobacco on South Main Street, and one for Cedartown Petro just down the road being sought by Syed Huq.

The commission is also expected to consider an amendment for the Livestock ordinance allowing residents to keep chickens within the city limits after they meet specific conditions and request a special land use permit.

Commissioners gather at 6 p.m. and will hold a public hearing over the matter prior to the official start of the September session. Those interested in attending are asked to please follow social distancing guidelines and wear a mask when conducting business in city hall.
