CPD: Two jailed after meth found in car without tag, insurance

No tag = Big problems.

That was the result for a pair who were taken into custody early Wednesday morning by Cedartown Police during a traffic stop after they were spotted in a car without valid registration or insurance, and were ultimately found with methamphetamine inside the car they tried to destroy.

Officers arrested Brian McNicholas, 23, and Ashley McAdams, 31, both of Buchanan addresses, after 3 a.m. on Wednesday when they were spotted driving down Main Street without a tag on a car by an officer patrolling the area, who ultimately stopped them at the Chevron gas station on North Main Street.

Police asked McAdams behind the wheel for her license – which she didn’t have – and information about insurance and registration. She told police it wasn’t her car, and she was both unaware of any issues with insurance or registration or if anything illegal was in the car.

While taking McAdams into custody, police spoke to McNicholas who told officers he had been drinking and didn’t want to get behind the wheel. While he agreed to be tested to see if he was OK to drive, officers noticed that the floorboard of the car had “small crystal shards” they believed to be methamphetamine.

They field tested the shards, and found that indeed it was the drug and also placed McNicholas in custody.

Police later found a bag that was in a cup the pair tried to destroy the drugs in before the traffic stop, but left residue behind the the baggie found within by officers. The search of the car also yielded ammunition for a .38 revolver, which McNicholas admitted to having stuffed in his right boot.

Officers looked up the pistol and found it was recorded as being stolen back in 2011.

Both were carried off to the Polk County Jail for booking without further incident.

McAdams remained in custody on a $10,600 bond on felony charges of possession of methamphetamine and tampering with evidence. She also faces misdemeanor charges of obscuring tag frame or tinted tag covers prohibited, driving without a valid license, no insurance, and expired registration.

McNicholas is also still in jail on a $13,000 bond on felony charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of firearm during commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies, tampering with evidence and theft by receiving stolen property.
