Police: Man jailed on multiple charges after ramming vehicle, struggling with officers

Nicholas Bennis Nettles

A Rockmart man was jailed over the weekend after a heated domestic incident that included the suspect ramming a vehicle and getting “combative” with officers, per Polk County Police reports.

Late Saturday, January 14 and into early Sunday morning, January 15, 2023, police arrested Nicholas Bennis Nettles, 28, 0f a Rockmart address after he was reported to be the aggressor in a domestic incident on Wheeler Ford Road.

Per the report, Nettles was initially taken into custody on the scene when officers were told he had access to weapons in his vehicle while they were on the way to Wheeler Ford Road to investigate the incident underway.

Officers immediately took Nettles into custody, and noted that he smelled as if he had been drinking. After being searched, officers attempted to get Nettles into the back of a police cruiser when he became “combative, and would not get into the patrol vehicle on his own free will.”

He was forced into the back, and was immediately taken off to the Polk County Jail.

After Nettles was carried away, police were able to eventually get the victim to calm down and also a relative of Nettles arrived on the scene after they were called out to Wheeler Ford Road to help. They provided officers a history of Nettles’ past behavior while other officers sought to calm the victim down.

Before all the officers arrived, one had gotten there initially and watched as Nettles rammed the back of the victim’s car and was “trying to push it.”

With evidence in hand to continue to investigate, police searched the car and found a Mac-10 style handgun with a suppressor on it in the back seat. A holstered handgun was also in the middle console, and a shotgun was in the passenger floor propped up against the seat.

Police seized the weapons, and finally heard from the victim.

She told police she came to visit Nettles while “in a very good mood” which he questioned, and made accusations. While arguing, she was distracted by a cat and he got “infuriated,” and proceeded to take out a handgun and fire it several times – not in the victim’s direction.

They left for the store after that, and once back forced her to get out and walk and then assaulted her and “threatened to shoot her dog.” Officers did note they didn’t find any visible marks on her neck of strangulation, which she claimed.

Police reported that the victim said she locked herself in her vehicle after getting away, and that was when he began to walk around her car with a gun in hand, got back into his vehicle and began to ram her as officers arrived on scene.

Officers provided her with information about getting a Temporary Protection Order.

Nettles was ultimately charged with felonies for aggravated assault and three counts of possession of a firearm or knife during commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies, along with misdemeanors for criminal trespass, reckless driving, and two counts of obstruction of law enforcement officers.

He remained in custody with bond denied as of this posting.
