REPORT: Man jailed on burglary charges, more than $170,000 stolen

Robert Louis Poulin

A Cedartown Man was jailed on felony charges after he turned himself into law enforcement when he admitted stealing more than $170,000 in items from a home in the Cherokee Country Club in recent days, then ran from authorities when confronted.

The Polk County Police reported that Robert Louis Poulin, 32, of 532 Cherokee Road, Cedartown, surrendered to police after he fled from the Cherokee Place residence on Saturday afternoon.

Per the report provided by County Police on Monday afternoon, Poulin is alleged to have taken $173,509 worth of items from the residence sometime on August 12. When the victims figured out what happened, they confronted him about the theft on Monday afternoon and after admitting his crime, he fled across the Cherokee Country Club golf course before police could arrive.

County Police put out a report on Poulin after talking to the victims, and officers from Cedartown Police and deputies from the Sheriff’s Office were helping to track him down. The victim eventually got Poulin on the phone, talked him into surrendering to police, and he was taken into custody by officers in the Walmart parking lot in Cedartown.

Per the report, Poulin did talk to officers and admitted his theft. He told police he got into the house using a spare key he found, took a Glock .40 caliber pistol from the kitchen, and then opened a safe and took $1,600 in cash and hundreds of thousands in appraised value in jewelry.

He told police he took the gun and jewelry to city pawn, where he got $150 for the firearm and $1,600 for the jewelry. Poulin used that and the cash to fund his drug habit, the report noted.

Police have yet to recover the gun because they only had a partial serial number at the time of the report, and were only able to get back $9,300 in appraised value of the jewelry sold. The rest – including a $50,000 3 carat diamond ring – have not yet been recovered.

Poulin was denied bond after being booked over the weekend. He remains in custody on felony charges of theft by taking, criminal attempt to commit a felony and two counts of first degree burglary.
