FULL HONORS: Riders pull into town last week to honor Sgt. Barry Henderson

A group who is working to honor the fallen across the country stopped in Cedartown last Wednesday for a few hours to remember one of the county’s own who passed away in 2021.

Motorcycles headed the convoy coming from Newnan last week on July 13 as the Beyond the Call of Duty – End of Watch – Ride to Remember 2021 rode into the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. They arrived to honor Sgt. Barry Henderson, who passed away in March 2021 as a result of complications caused by COVID-19.

His widow Chrisy and family joined officials from the Sheriff’s Office, local police and the county administration to help honor the memory of Sgt. Henderson, who is one of hundreds being remembered after they passed in 2021 while serving in public safety.

The group formed in the past few years is a nonprofit that travels the country to ensure “no officer is forgotten” along with families and loved ones who were left behind after the passing of their law enforcement officer.

The Spokane, Washington organization has been touring the country since June with the trailer and started in Washington state at the beginning of June. Their tour brought them to 22 different departments in Georgia over several days, including here in Polk County.

Their stop in Cedartown was followed by one at Berry College in Rome. They’ve since continued onward through the south to Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia in recent days.

Along with prayers and hugs, the organization provided the opportunity for Chrisy to leave a message for her beloved on a banner with many others who have been honored during the ride and on the trailer touring the country.

She noted that she wished “I could see your smile!”

The community continues to come together to remember Sgt. Henderson. In recent months, it was announced that an intersection will be renamed in his honor after State Sen. Jason Anavitarte pushed through legislation to honor his service in public safety.
